What is the IFS Food Standard?

The IFS Food standard entails detailed reviews of products and production processes in order to assess the ability of food manufacturers to produce safe and quality products. The IFS Food standard places great emphasis on the harmonization of products with the legal requirements and specifications of the individual country in which the product is placed on the market, all in order to offer the customer products of the highest quality.

Product safety and quality are key aspects of this standard, with audit processes serving to improve the internal processes of manufacturers to maintain the same level of quality in the future. In other words, once a food manufacturer meets the requirements for obtaining the IFS Food Standard certificate, the company is subject to continuous audits.

Since its inception in 2003, the IFS Food standard has become one of the leading global certifications covering a wide range of products and manufacturers. The set of standards, programs, audit protocols, tools and supporting documents required for certification is continuously expanded and optimized to meet the increasing and specific demands of the market, i.e. customers and consumers. In short, the IFS Food standard focuses on private label manufacturers, providing safety and high quality of products that they sell under their own name in stores.

What is the role of the IFS standard?

Today, IFS standards represent global safety and quality norms that enable transparency along the entire supply chain, ensuring that consumers have access to information about a particular product at all times. IFS certification offers several key benefits for food companies that strive for excellence in quality, product safety and customer satisfaction. Among others, there are increased sales due to increased customer trust in certified companies, as well as reduced operating costs due to lower costs associated with waste, product recalls and quality complaints.

IFS Food certification places the main emphasis on creating trust in products and processes, which means ensuring safety, quality, legality, authenticity and compliance with specific requirements.

Who is the certification intended for?

The IFS Food standard is applicable to food manufacturers, i.e. it is intended for companies that produce, process and/or package food products. All IFS standards use a risk-based approach, allowing the requirements to be adapted to the specific risks associated with products and processes. Continuous improvement is not only the goal of certified companies, but also the fundamental aspiration of IFS Management GmbH, which strives to provide top standards and services in the field of certification.
